software #fediverse #mitra
I’ve been playing around with Mitra the Mastodon compatible fediverse server. I have a small instance at https://mitra.northumbria.me/ . This lightweight server seems ideal for small or personal instances, and by the looks of the resource usage scale to heavy usage, probably thousands though without clustering not tens of thousands. However there are a few things missing that would be necessary in order to manage a large instance.
- An admin web interface, at the moment a lot of admin functions requite a combination of copying from the website and pasting into a command line interface.
- Open registration really needs either a capture, email confirmation, or preferably both. At the moment open registration is subject to potential abuse, and the alternative of asking people to email for invitations would be too labour intensive for large sites.
- Also an email interface to allow people to recover their own lost passwords. At the moment this requires emailing an admin to reset it.
- Finer grained blocking, I believe that currently you can only block instances, not people. Blocking instances has to be done via the command line.
That said I think for small instances it is excellent, and is being developed very quickly.
